TEAtris

'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'.

Oftentimes when we look at an object in its entirety, we do not consider the role that each of its components plays in helping the object serve its function.

TEAtris explores this idea by physically separating the contents of a beverage into its fundamental elements;

the main mug holds the liquid (whether tea or coffee) while the two other sections hold the sugar and milk. Functionally, this allows users to control the proportions of their drink’s ingredients, while also representing the complex relationship between distinctness and synergy. TEAtris is crafted to have the form of an ordinary cup when completely assembled while also being able to function as three distinct containers when separated. This versatility gives users the freedom to define what they see as the “finished product” by using the cup however they see fit.

Designed on Rhino, this mug was created by creating a 3D printed prototype which was then used to create three 2-part moulds. The moulds were used to slip cast the final piece which were then twice fired and glazed. All pieces nestle together to create a complete mug that is both ergonomic and beautiful.

Using a modified 3dm file, this mug was 3D printed using a clay extruding Potterbot. This was then fired and glazed as well. The outside has been smoothed over and glazed while the inside remains exposed and unglazed.
